The Harris Tweed Overcoat
At Sunspel, we have always believed that true luxury lies in how something is made. Our pursuit of exceptional craftsmanship led us to create a piece that embodies the very best of British making – our Harris Tweed overcoat, a modern interpretation of an iconic British outerwear style.
To understand the story behind Harris Tweed, we travelled to the Isle of Lewis and Harris in the Outer Hebrides to visit the mill and meet the weavers who create the remarkable fabric. Across the island, individual weavers still operate handlooms in their own homes, producing cloth that carries the rhythm and spirit of island life. The experience was a reminder of what makes Harris Tweed so special: the sense of community, the deep connection between craft and landscape, and the pride that comes from creating something lasting and real.

Every inch of Harris Tweed is woven by hand in the homes of islanders, using pure virgin wool sourced from hardy British sheep such as the Cheviot and Scottish Blackface breeds. The wool is dyed in the fibre rather than the yarn, allowing the weavers to blend multiple colours together and achieve the extraordinary depth and richness that define the cloth. It is a process protected by law under the Harris Tweed Act, which ensures that the fabric must be spun, dyed and woven entirely within the Outer Hebrides. Once woven, each length of cloth is inspected and approved by the Harris Tweed Authority before receiving the Orb mark, a globally recognised symbol of authenticity and quality.

The colours of Harris Tweed are drawn directly from its surroundings. The moorlands, peat, moss and sea that shape the islands. Each yarn is blended to reflect these natural tones, creating subtle variations that echo the light and texture of the Hebridean landscape. Our unique, custom tweed designs captured this palette through hues such as Selvedge Blue and Truffle, inspired by wild coastal light and heathered hills. Every batch of yarn is dyed and spun in small quantities, preserving the individuality of each piece of cloth.

The result is a fabric of character and substance and we created a garment that reinterprets British outerwear for today. Our Harris Tweed overcoat is a blend of the traditional texture and durability of the cloth with the refined simplicity that defines Sunspel design. The silhouette is timeless and versatile, built to last for years and to age beautifully. Our creation reflected the craftsmanship of the Hebrides and the quiet modernity of Sunspel. A meeting of two British traditions, united by a shared respect for quality, community, and care.
